With their 80-hour power reserve automatic movements, solid steel cases, lume-detailed dials and 600 meter water resistant cases, last year’s Tissot Seastar 2000 Pro Powermatic 80 collection ticked all the boxes for a professional diver’s watches. Now joining the series are two new models, one blue gradient dial and another with a black centrepiece detailed with gold hardware.
When it comes to finding an accessible diving watch, one that will assist you in water pressures of up to 200 to 300 metres, there are plenty of options to choose from and all of them just as respectable as the next. For professional deep diving instruments however, the search gets a little tricker, especially if you’re trying to keep the price point low. Yet one brand we have always relied on is Swiss watch manufacturer Tissot. Owned by the Swatch Group, they benefit from a wide portfolio of technologies, materials and movements, one of these being the Powermatic 80 movement. It first debuted within a Tissot watch in 2011 but was later introduced into Certina and Hamilton collections as well. It is shared resources like this that allow the umbrella of Swatch Group brands to keep their prices so low, and Tissot is no exception. Once again, the Tissot Seastar 2000 Pro Powermatic 80 delivers a whole lot of bang for your buck.
Starting with the case, the Tissot Seastar 2000 Pro Powermatic 80 watch collection quickly proves itself as more than just a casual weekend-divers watch but a strong and powerful professional instrument with a water resistance rating at 600 metres, or 2,000 feet. The rating is helped by a helium escape valve at the side, a screw down crown and a matching screw down case back, all of which comply with the stringent ISO 6425 standard for dive watches. The case sits rather big on the wrist at 46 millimetres in diameter and with a height of 16.25 millmetres, so this is a big divers watch to say the least. Yet thanks to the short lugs, the case sits relatively low and it is much easier to wear than you’d expect from a 46 millimetre-sized divers watch.
On top, the Tissot Seastar 2000 Pro Powermatic 80 watches deliver domed sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment beside a stainless steel unidirectional bezel adorned with deep ratcheted for easy manipulation even while wearing thick diving gloves. The bezel also boasts a scratch resistant ceramic insert in black engraved with a suitable 60 minute scale. The case is also engineered from 316L stainless steel and sits tightly on the wrist thanks to the blue textile strap of the blue gradient dial and the black rubber strap of the black and gold dial. The blue dialled reference’s case also differs for a black DLC coating.
For the dial of the Tissot Seastar 2000 Pro Powermatic 80 watches, the same wave pattern of last year’s collection returns with a degrade, or gradient, effect where the colour darkens as it reaches the edges. The DLC-coated model is found under reference T120.607.37.041.00 and features a gorgeous deep navy centrepiece which fades out to black at the circumference. The large applied markers, varying from triangle, rectangle and rounded shape, are rhodium plated to match the rhodium-plated oversized hands and silver detailed bezel.
For the classic stainless steel model, reference T120.607.17.441.01, the dial starts off grey in the centre before fading into a deep black at the edges. For a nice touch, the black centrepiece is then paired with contrasting gold-plated hardware for the indexes and hands which then extends out onto the 60 minute scale of the bezel. Both dials also include the seconds hand with a “T” for Tissot counterweight and are generously adorned with white Superluminova inserts which glow blue in the dark.
Housed within the Tissot Seastar 2000 Pro Powermatic 80 watches is as the name suggests, the Powermatic 80 automatic winding movement. The Swiss made calibre adds two major improvements to its original ETA base including an extended power reserve of 80 hours and a Nivachron balance-spring, a material invented by Nivarox that is impervious to magnetism. We’re also promised 23 jewels, a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour and the smooth running of hours, minutes and seconds hand and date window at 6 o’clock. The Powermatic 80 calibre can be admired through the sapphire crystal case back of each Tissot Seastar 2000 Pro watch.
