The Tissot PRX watch collection proved so popular on it’s launch earlier in the year that the Swiss watch manufacturer has added three new designs to the table. The original release brought the 1970’s-inspired architecture to life with a quartz movement while the new Tissot PRX Powermatic 80 watches welcome an automatic winding calibre. Alongside the new movement, the designs also receive a textured dial and a slightly larger case size.
It’s feels strange to call the Tissot PRX Powermatic 80 collection “70’s-inspired” when it’s integrated profile, barrel-shaped case and Clous De Paris dial is very much on trend right now. But, in fact, the PRX is a revival of a smaller design launched by Tissot during 1978, the Tissot Seastar, which at the time marked the beginning of bold and modern Swiss watch design in line with the increase in quartz movements. Over the last few years however this aesthetic has reappeared, dominating what many consider the “luxury sports watch” market with other Swiss names like Maurice Lacroix and Audemars Piguet similarly profiting in its popularity.
The Tissot PRX Powermatic 80 collection offers one of the more affordable luxury sports watch designs with the price point starting at £565 for the full stainless steel models at £590 for the gold-accented reference. The cases themselves also hit the sweet spot at 40mm in diameter and 10.9mm in height, the same width as their quartz predecessor but a little taller to make room for the automatic winding movement inside. The cases are also paired with a circular mirror polished bezel in steel or rose gold which nicely contrasts to the brushed finishing of the case itself.
The rose gold-accented model comes under reference T1374072103100 and pairs a rose gold bezel with a white Clous De Paris finished dial detailed with rose gold plated hands and indexes. The remaining two steel models opt for a black textured dial and a blue textured dial, both adorned with rhodium plated hands and hour markers. The black model can be found under reference T1374071105100 and the blue dial under T1374071104100. The dials also boast Superluminova coating and a white date window at 3 o’clock.
Alongside its slim and smooth appearance, the biggest draw of the Tissot PRX Powermatic 80 watch is its automatic winding movement. The Powermatic 80 calibre presents one of the best value Swiss Made automatic movements on the market offering a more than impressive power reserve of 80 hours alongside a 21,600vph frequency and 23 jewels. Despite to its surprising affordability, the movement is refined and robust thanks to a patented Nivachron balance spring and a wave motif on the oscillating rotor. You can admire the movement in full swing through the sapphire crystal case back, the same material used to protect the dial alongside additional anti-reflective coating.
Completing its status as a luxury sports watch, the Tissot PRX Powermatic 80 promises a 100 metre water resistant rating and is secured to the wrist by a stainless steel integrated bracelet. The tapered design of the bracelet makes the PRX feel much more expensive that what it is, offering a combination of both brushed and polished links and a classic folding buckle.
