Bell & Ross introduces their latest limited edition designed in collaboration with the Alpina F1 Racing Team. With a vast history creating aircraft cockpit instruments and military pilots’ watches, it was an exciting change of pace for Bell & Ross when they announced back in 2016 they were joining the world of motor racing and collaborating with the Renault F1 team. Over the years, the partnership has seen several highly collectible releases and in 2021, when the Formula 1 team changed their name to the Alpina F1 team, Bell & Ross celebrated the evolution with a trio of Bell & Ross Alpina watches. The 2021 BR V3-94 A521, the BR 03-94 A521 and the BR-X1 A521 watches all took inspiration from the car racing in that season, offering imposing stainless steel cases and bold blue accents. In the same way the car inspired the watches of last year, the new 2022 Alpine F1 racing vehicle is modelled after this year’s A522 racing car and its powerful black and blue livery.
While stainless steel was the core component of last year’s Alpina release, the new Bell & Ross BR 03-92 A522 Alpine F1 Limited Edition opts for matte black ceramic to mimic the sleek and stealthy curves of the A522 racing car. Compared to steel, ceramic is considerably lighter on the wrist and offers increased scratch resistance and hypoallergenic properties. As such, the Bell & Ross BR 03-92 A522 Alpine F1 watch is an absolute pleasure to wear, measuring in at 42mm by 42mm in diameter. The black ceramic also respects the codes of racing car design, imitating the anti-reflective tints of dashboards for less reflection and consequently better legibility.
Matte black ceramic makes up almost the entire architecture of the Bell & Ross BR 03-92 A522 Alpine F1 Limited Edition including its fixed rounded bezel, four screws at each corner of the case and screw down crown at 3 o’clock. The case back is also engineered from solid ceramic and alongside the crown helps to ensure a 100 metre water resistant rating. We’re also provided with scratch resistant sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment for effortlessly legibility of the dial. Securing the case of the Bell & Ross BR 03-92 A522 to the wrist is an ultra-breathable micro-perforated rubber strap closed by a black PVD pin buckle.
For its dial, the new Bell & Ross BR 03-92 A522 Alpine F1 Limited Edition takes design cues from the speedometer of the Alpine car while referencing the brand’s signature colour code of black, blue and white. The time and date complications are laid out on a matte black backdrop dressed in large white Arabic numerals, slender hands for the hours and minutes and a bright blue seconds hand stylised with an “A” on the counterweight for Alpine. The hardware for the hours, minutes and numerals are generously applied with Superluminova and a framed date window is included at 6 o’clock. Finally, for one last touch of colour, the inner flange is adorned in the same sporty blue and the blue, white and red flag recalling Alpine’s tricolour origins is placed above the date.
Housed within the Bell & Ross BR 03-92 A522 Alpine F1 watch is the BR-CAL.302 automatic winding movement. It’s a Swiss made calibre we’ve seen within the BR 03-92 series on a number of occasions and provides easy-wearing hours, minutes, seconds and date function, a 42 hour power reserve and a frequency of 28,800vph.
