Swiss watch manufacturer Breitling continues their long, deep-rooted relationship with the Royal Air Force with another special edition watch designed in sponsorship of the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, the Red Arrows. For the first time, the relationship is celebrated using a Breitling Aerospace EVO watch boasting a host of smart functions, a lightweight titanium case and a SuperQuartz movement. Meet the new Breitling Aerospace EVO Red Arrows Limited Edition watch…
No doubt you’re familiar with Breitling’s rich aviation heritage. For decades, their pilots’ watches have been revered for their durability and precision, utilised by pilots, airlines and aircraft manufacturers. Since the 1930’s, Breitling watches have also been the timepiece of choice for the Royal Air Force. The luxury watch brand produced onboard chronographs for aircrafts during this time, adding many to RAF bombers that would later play a significant role in the WWII victory. In 1965, the legendary Red Arrows team became known as the world’s greatest aerobatic display team and naturally, these brave pilots chose Breitling chronographs to ensure the perfect timing of their performances.
Gavin Murphy Managing Director Breitling UK said: “We are proud that Breitling and the Red Arrows have one of the longest running relationships between a watch brand and a military display team. A relationship built on shared values, precision timing and excellence and a trust in our designs and functionality, as the pilots continue to wear our watches whilst testing the limits in their breath-taking displays. This Aerospace – elevated with Red Arrows insignia – is a long-requested edition that we have great pleasure in making available to the public for the first time.”
Squadron Leader Tom Bould, Red 1 and Team Leader of the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, adds: “Timing is critical to the world-class, dynamic displays and colourful flypasts synonymous with the Red Arrows. The team has to arrive at the right place, at the right time anywhere around the world, to the second – often with millions watching in-person or many more enjoying the performances via global media coverage. This precision and attention-to-detail are hallmarks shared by the Red Arrows and Breitling. But our mutual dedication and focus goes further than that. We’re pleased to have such a longstanding relationship with another organisation that understands how to combine this unrelenting requirement for precision with creativity, innovation and style.”
Last year’s Breitling Chronomat Red Arrows Limited Edition was a huge success, so we have no doubt the new Aerospace EVO Red Arrows watch will follow suit. It’s been a while since we got hands-on with one of the pieces from the brand’s Aerospace collection, a series perfectly suited to the air with chronograph and crown activated functionality. The new special edition opts for titanium across the case, a material of choice for many cockpit dwellers for its increased scratch resistance and lightness compared to stainless steel.
The case of the Breitling Aerospace EVO Red Arrows Limited Edition sits on the wrist at 43mm in diameter and partners with a matching titanium bracelet and a unidirectional rotating bezel engraved with a 60 minute scale on top. The bezel is also ratcheted for easy manipulation and features handsome polished accents at each 15 minute marker. For a 100 metre water resistance, we’re also promised a non-screw locked crown with two gaskets and integrated pushpiece, sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment on both sides and a screw down satin-finished titanium case back. The latter is beautifully adorned with the Eclat crest for the Red Arrows.
Like last year’s Breitling Red Arrows watch, the new Aerospace Evo Edition presents a stunning navy blue dial adorned with the Red Arrows Arrows trademark “Diamond Nine” flight formation at 3 o’clock in red. The motif pairs with the two iconic digital displays, both of which have a backlight for readability in the dark, large stencil-like Arabic numerals and two central hands for the hours and minutes. The hands and numerals are also coated in Superluminova for low lighting legibility.
Powering the Breitling Aerospace EVO Red Arrows Limited Edition watch is one of the brand’s coveted chronometer-certified SuperQuartz movements. The exact movement in question is the Breitling Calibre 79 which promises a battery life of up to 4 years and a huge range of multifunction technology displayable on the digital screens. These include 1/100th second chronograph, countdown timer, calendar, second time zone, alarm, minute repeater, and EOL indicator.
The Breitling Aerospace EVO Red Arrows watch is limited to 350 pieces and retails at £3,500. With the sale of each exclusive watch, you’ll also receive a special commemorative coin officially authorised by the Ministry of Defence. The large, 2-inch diameter coin is made of a pure zinc alloy and is engraved with the emblematic “Diamond Nine” emblem and the Breitling heritage “B” on the reverse.
