This year at the 2015 Baselword event, Nomos Glashutte watchmakers announced a new addition to their white gold Lux collections. The two originals, laced with a powder blue and clean white dial were a completely new direction for the small German brand. The fine lines and delicate proportions which encased a soft rectangular profile were admired worldwide for their fresh beauty.
Now, the Lux has returned with an even finer, yet strikingly audacious uniform. Not a watch that you will forget in a hurry, for sure – the Nomos Glashutte Lux Cicada dressed in an exquisite citrus lemon, showcases rose gold contours which encase elegant detailing to the dial. How can a watch design carry so many refined subtleties, yet simultaneously achieve such boldness? This may be a question that we will be asking ourselves for quite some time, because Nomos Glashutte have managed this effortlessly yet show no inclination of explaining how they do so any time soon! Their unexplained skill and mastery may keep us all guessing, but their mysterious allure can be instantly enjoyed once the watch finds a home on our eagerly awaited wrists!. The new sizing of the Nomo Glashutte Lux Cicada is pleasantly welcomed, not that the dimensions of the original Lux Hell White Gold and Lux Light Blue in White Gold were anything less than perfect. But the new generation of Nomos watches seem to relax into their perimeters much easier. The new Cicada, along with the Nomos Lux Ermine and Nomos Lux Sable bear wearer-friendly dimensions of 38.55mm by 34mm and these seem ideal proportions when we consider the vast starkness of the face and simplistic detailing to the dial’s accommodating features.
Nomos Glashutte watches consider the newest addition to be abundant in contradictions. This, at first may seem a rather unappealing term to describe these timepieces by, however one soon realises that the “contradictions” that Nomos refer to here, have been created intentionally and with clever purpose. The Nomos GlashutteLux Cicada is a timelessly elegant instrumental tool, the manufacturing ethos of the company has and always will support the extraordinary results of an expertly hand-assembled timepiece. These watches, like all Nomos watches are developed uniquely and with great attention to detail. Their careful designs are a result of Nomos’ time and dedication which the beauty of a small independent manufacturing company allows them to sustain. However, it is difficult to ignore the strands of contemporary DNA which run throughout the watch. The Nomos DUW 200 calibre offers 84 hours of power reserve and consists of twin mainspring barrels and a hand-engraved barrel cock, its angles edges and polished finishes accentuate a three-quarter plate, embellished in sunbeam effect and 5 gold chatons among its 23 jewels. The 18kt rose gold structure is securely attached to an anti-reflective and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass front and exhibition back which ensures a water resistance of 3 ATM. The galvanised dial hosts rose gold plated hand and minute indices, balanced beautifully against a dark brown Cordovan Shell hand-stitched strap, executed on a solid 18kt rose gold clasp.
