At the end of 2019 Breitling discontinued their Colt collection, a series of quartz-powered entry level pilots watches. In its place, the Breitling Avenger was launched, originally debuted in 2001 but relaunched as the Swiss watch manufacturer’s boldest collection of aviation watches to date. Over the last two years, the Breitling Avenger collection has grown significantly in size and today, the series introduces its latest member, the Breitling Avenger GMT 43 White.
No luxury watch brand in the world has a more sustaining relationship to aviation than Breitling. Their heritage was fortified during the 1930’s and 40’s when they engineered onboard clocks for aeroplanes which then led to the creation of the Breitling Navitimer in 1953 , one of the industry’s most celebrated pilot’s watches. The Avenger had some significant footsteps to follow but engineered from pure Breitling DNA and promising a more contemporary take on an aviator’s instrument, the Breitling Avenger has become a decisive success. Since it was relaunched in 2019, we have seen a number of iterations join the collection including classic time and date models, chronographs and several limited editions. The series is also home to a range of Breitling Avenger GMT watches, a complication certainly deserving of any cockpit resident. The Avenger GMT returns but now with a fresh white dial colour. Let’s take a look at the new Breitling Avenger GMT 43 White watch.
The Breitling Avenger GMT is a classic pilots watch, there’s no debating that. Its robust profile is less for gentle wrists and more for men on a mission with loud, sharp and edgy angles and a statement ratcheted bezel purposely designed to enable its wearer to operate it with gloves on. The Breitling Avenger GMT 43 White watch, as its name suggests, measures to 43 millimetres in diameter and is engineered from timeless stainless steel. Its bezel retains its characteristic aesthetic with four bulky tabs, unidirectional functionality and an engraved 60 minute scale. The case is also home to a screw down case back, screw locked crown with two gaskets and a water resistance of 300 metres.
Sheltered beneath scratch resistant cambered sapphire crystal glass treated with glareproof coating on both sides, the fresh new white dial offers effortless legibility on a plate. Blackened hands for hours, minutes and seconds deliver your classic timekeeping complications alongside matching blackened striped indexes and a bordered date window at 3 o’clock. Also at the centre of the Breitling Avenger GMT 43 White watch is the unmissable GMT hand coloured in bright red and like the rest of the hardware is treated with glow in the dark Superluminova.
Breitling’s choice of mechanical movement for the Breitling Avenger GMT 43 White watch is the Breitling 32 calibre, a Swiss made automatic movement based on the ETA 2893-2 base. Alongside its second time zone complication, the movement promises a power reserve of 42 hours, a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and 21 jewels. The movement is kept hidden behind a closed case back decorated with the Breitling and Avenger emblem. To finish the Avenger GMT 43 White watch, a choice of three straps is available. The first is a classic three-row link stainless steel bracelet and the second two are anthracite-coloured calfskin leather straps with a contrasting yellow lining. The first textile band opts for a pin buckle while the second chooses a folding buckle.
