As is customary for Czapek, the Swiss watchmaker once again combines forces with a talented team of designers, craftsmen and production partners, to create a new range of elegant luxury watches. The new collection is named the Czapek Antarctique S ‘Carte des Nuages’, translating to “Map of the Clouds”, and debuts a mesmerizing iridescent mother of pearl dial in white or grey offset with glittering ‘Antarctique cut’ diamonds.
So far for 2023, Czapek has focused solely on their Antarctique watch collection. We’ve already reviewed several of the designs launched as part of their Watches & Wonders 2023 showcase like the Czapek Antarctique S ‘Sashiko’ watches their Japanese-inspired textured dials and the Czapek Antarctique Titanium Dark Sector watch with its lightweight titanium construction and arch-detailed display. We also got hands-on with the Czapek Antarctique Révélation watch which puts the spotlight on the micro-rotor movement working inside. Our last release to review is the Czapek Antarctique S ‘Carte des Nuages’ watch which overindulges on rare materials like mother of pearl and diamond.
Czapek proves that their new Antarctique S ‘Carte des Nuages’ watch is beautifully unisex, offering the case at a diameter of 38.5mm and 10.6mm tall. The case is engineered from stainless steel with sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment adorning both the front and the back. We’re also promised a 120 metre water resistant rating – very unusual for a dress watch covered in diamonds and mother of pearl. Speaking of diamonds, the cases are almost entirely wrapped in sparkling white gemstones. Diamonds cover the bezel, integrated lugs and the first ‘C’ link of the bracelet while a single diamond is placed upon the winding crown. In total, the Czapek Antarctique S ‘Carte des Nuages’ watches are adorned in a total of 0.95 carats of diamond.
To match the sparkle of the case, the dial of the Czapek Antarctique S ‘Carte des Nuages’ watch is equally indulged in a combination of iridescent gemstones. The backdrop is crafted from a choice of white or grey mother of pearl (Misty White naming the former and Stormy Grey naming the latter) and is ornamented with a glittering pair of ‘Antarctique cut’ diamonds at 12 o’clock and an array of Princess cut diamonds at each of the 11 other hours. The Antarctique cut is an entirely new diamond cut created by Adrian Buchmann of London-based studio Fuzion Ltd solely for Czapek. On top of the white or grey mother of pearl base, Czapek has also added some unique guilloché gridlines subtly alluding to cartography. Finally, at the centre of each Czapek Antarctique S ‘Carte des Nuages’ watch is three slender, rhodium-plated and skeletonised hands for the hours, minutes and seconds.
The movement in charge of running the Czapek Antarctique S ‘Carte des Nuages’ watches is the automatic winding SXH5 calibre, the first movement conceived from scratch in-house by Czapek. As always, the finishing is top-notch here. The off-centred micro-rotor allows for an unobstructed view of the entire mechanism including the free-sprung balance wheel and seven skeletonized bridges, five of which are openworked. The movement delivers standard time-only function and a 60 hour power reserve. Completing both Czapek Antarctique S ‘Carte des Nuages’ watches is the familiar Antarctique integrated stainless steel bracelet with C-shaped links and a micro-adjustment on the folding buckle. The strap also comes with Czapek’s exclusive Easy Release system so you can effortlessly swap out the bracelet for one of leather or rubber.
