Alongside a new range of DOXA Sub 200 C-Graph II watches, dive watch specialist DOXA has added a new bezel variation to its cult classic Army collection for 2023. The new DOXA Army Green Hunter watch swaps out the previous bronze bezel with one of stainless steel, but still elects the same gorgeous military green colour for the ceramic insert.
The DOXA Army watch has a complicated history. It all began in 1968, shortly after the Swiss Army set up a special force of military divers. Having seen what DOXA could do, with their already widely-popular DOXA Sub 200 and 300 series, the Swiss Army asked DOXA to put their SUB 300T watch through a series of rigorous tests, which of course it passed. This led to the SUB 300T becoming part of the standard equipment for military divers during this time. Then in 1969, the collaboration between DOXA and the Swiss Army went one step further when they created a new watch designed exclusively for militants. Suitably named the DOXA Army, the watch boasted all the same specifications as the Sub 300T but debuted a matte black case, black diving bezel and a military-inspired beige dial. The DOXA Army watch was intended for use exclusively by the Swiss Army, but of course as is often with rare luxury watches like this, collectors eventually got their hands on them and they became cult-classics of the brand.
So when DOXA relaunched the Army watch back in 2022, coveters of the original designs went mad. The series began with a special black ceramic limited edition created exclusively for retailer Watches of Switzerland before extending to include a range of globally-available designs in stainless steel. Of these steel models, there were two designs to choose from, one with a steel bezel and black ceramic insert and a second with a bronze bezel and a green ceramic insert. The latter was an easy favourite for us, with the warmth of the bronze pairing beautifully with the hunter green insert. Now for those that prefer the classicism of stainless steel but want the military green colouring, you can enjoy the new 2023 DOXA Army Green Hunter Steel Bezel watch.
Pretty much every aspect of the new DOXA Army Green Hunter Steel Bezel watch is the same as those before, just swapping out the bronze bezel for one of stainless steel. The bezel is still unidirectional with tyre-tread ratcheting and a printed 60 minute scale on the green ceramic insert. The case also remains engineered from stainless steel with a diameter of 42.5mm, a screw down case back and a threaded steel case back water resistant to 300 metres. The case is topped by scratch resistant sapphire crystal glass treated with anti-reflective coating.
The dial of the DOXA Army Green Hunter watch is also familiar, honouring its predecessor with a sandy-beige coloured backdrop, bright orange hour and minute hands, an arrow-tipped seconds hand, silvered indexes and a date window at 3 o’clock. All the key hardware is adorned with Superluminova for glow in the dark readability. Powering the hours, minutes, seconds and date is the ETA 2824 automatic winding movement which ensures a 38-hour power reserve, 4Hz frequency and 25 jewels.
Finally, the DOXA Army Green Hunter Steel Bezel watch is available on a choice of two straps. The first is a FKM rubber strap in dark green or black while the second is the popular “beads-of-rice” stainless steel bracelet. The clasps for both are engraved with the iconic DOXA fish symbol. With every order of the DOXA Army watch, you’ll also receive a complementary NATO camouflage strap which comes in a special case adorned with the original camouflage pattern worn by the Swiss Army during the 1960’s.
