Forming part of Breitling’s Air Universe, the Breitling Avenger watch is as tough and bold as its name suggests. It takes design inspiration from some of the Swiss watch manufacturer’s original pilot’s watches and combines them with all of Breitling’s latest modern technology, ensuring a robust and reliable companion for both aerial adventurers in the cockpit and us every day land dwellers. Joining the Breitling Avenger collection for 2023 is a new, high-performance GMT chronograph with a sturdy 45mm case, in-house automatic movement and a sleek black dial. Let’s get up close and personal with the freshly released Breitling Avenger Chronograph GMT 45 Black watch…
The Case
As is standard now for Breitling Avenger watches, the new Avenger Chronograph GMT 45 Black watch has a fairly large and robust case with a chunky ratcheted bezel, a studded screw in crown and thick piston-style chronograph pushers. The entire case, which measures in at 45mm in diameter, 16.46mm tall and with a lug-to-lug width of 22mm, is engineered from stainless steel with a combination of brushed and polished surfaces. The unidirectional rotating bezel is one of its most defining features, set with four large rider tabs, three engraved with numerals that correspond to its 60 minute scale and a third detailed with a pearlescent pip. The sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment, screw in crown and screwed case back also ensure a 300 metre water resistant rating.
The Dial
It’s on the dial of the Breitling Avenger Chronograph GMT 45 Black watch where the newness comes into play. The smooth black display is adorned with both chronograph and GMT complication so you can not only time your adventurers in the cockpit but track two time zones at once as you jet around the world. The chronograph complication is presented on two snailed, anthracite-coloured counters; the 30 minutes counter sits at 12 o’clock while the 12 hours is positioned at 6 o’clock. A third snailed subsidiary dial is added at 9 o’clock for the small seconds.
Meanwhile, the GMT hand is placed at the centre, standing out boldly with its red colouration and large arrow-shaped tip which points out towards a sloped 24 hour scale. There’re also three central hands for the hours, minutes and chronograph seconds and a date window at 3 o’clock. The Breitling Avenger Chronograph GMT 45 Black watch maintains its military-esque appearance with stencil inspired Arabic numerals and large sword-shaped hands, all generously adorned with glow in the dark Superluminova. The dial is completed by a silvered winged Breitling logo to the left of the blacked out date window.
The Movement
Housed inside the Breitling Avenger Chronograph GMT 45 Black watch is one of Breitling’s in-house automatic winding movements. The Breitling 24 Calibre is, like all of Breitling’s movements, chronometer certified to be accurate to 4 to +6 seconds per day. It also promises a power reserve of 42 hours, 25 jewels and a frequency of 28,800vph.
The Strap
The Breitling Avenger Chronograph GMT 45 Black watch is currently available to order on one of two straps. The first is a standard three-link stainless steel bracelet with brushed and polished finishing and a folding buckle. The second option is a black military-leather strap with contrasting white stitching. The leather strap can be ordered with a traditional stainless steel pin buckle or a folding clasp.
