There’s just something really appealing about the combination of black and gold. I’m not sure if it’s the elegant contrast between the two colours or its associations with luxury, but the pair of shades brought together on a timepiece is a stylish mix. Anyone else with a penchant for black and gold will be pleased to hear that Hamilton have gone and launched a new capsule collection of five timepieces dressed in these very colours. Here’s everything you need to know about the new Hamilton Black & Gold Capsule watch collection…
Hamilton Jazzmaster Auto Chrono Black & Gold Watch
First up in the Hamilton Black & Gold Capsule collection is a watch many of you will recognise as one of the Swiss watch manufacturer’s most classic offerings. The Hamilton Jazzmaster Auto Chrono delivers an elegant dress watch in black and gold, including a black PVD stainless steel case with a width of 42mm and a height of 15.23mm. The black coating of the case reduces its size significantly on the wrist, as does the smooth thin unadorned bezel, brushed lugs and elegant oval-shaped pushers for manipulating the chronograph. The Hamilton Jazzmaster Auto Chrono Black & Gold is water resistant to 100 metres and secures to the wrist by a suitably retro thick black bund leather strap.
While the entire architecture of the Hamilton Jazzmaster Auto Chrono watch is black, the dial delivers accents of gold with the three subsidiary dials for the small seconds, 30 minutes totaliser and 12 hour totaliser all bordered in round gold frames and set with gold hands. The counters are black, to match the rest of the black display, but contrast slightly for their snailed decoration. At the centre, the hours, minutes, and chronograph seconds hands are finished in yellow gold with the outer track, date window and inscriptions finished in the same hue. The Hamilton Jazzmaster Auto Chrono watch is powered by the H-21 automatic winding movement with a power reserve of 60 hours.
Hamilton Jazzmaster Auto Black & Gold Watch
Part of the same Jazzmaster family, the second instalment into the Hamilton Black & Gold Capsule collection is a classic 36mm three-hand dress watch simply named the Hamilton Jazzmaster Auto. It’s smaller stainless steel diameter is coated in the same black PVD coating boasting a height of 10mm, a water resistance of 50 metres and a matte black NATO-style leather strap closed by a traditional pink buckle. A knurled crown sits at 3 o’clock also in black surrounded by a combination of brushed and polished surfaces.
Like the case, the dial of the Hamilton Jazzmaster Auto Black & Gold watch is kept clean and uncluttered with no date window in sight but simply straight yellow gold hour, minute and seconds hands for the time. To match, there’s also a snailed gold peripheral minutes track and matching yellow gold lettering for the brand’s logo. For a nice touch of legibility in low lighting, the minutes hand is tipped in a small insert of glow in the dark lume. Powering the Hamilton Jazzmaster Auto is another Swiss made movement, this time the H-10 automatic winding calibre based on the ETA C07.611 base. Like it’s chronograph counterpart above, it comes equipped with a Nivachron hairspring but due its fewer complications, we’re promised an increased power reserve of 80 hours.
Hamilton American Classic Pan Europ Black & Gold Watch
Our personal favourite within the new Hamilton Black & Gold Capsule watch collection is this Hamilton American Classic Pan Europ watch. Still vintage despite its contemporary black and gold colour palette, the design revives the 1970’s aesthetic of the original Hamilton Pan Europ watch which made history as one of the world’s first automatic chronographs. It’s gorgeous cushion-shaped case is finished in the familiar black PVD coating and paired with polished and brushed surfaces, sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective coating and a rotating bezel. The bezel gives the watch an almost diving-instrument look with a 60 minute scale printed in grey across the black PVD circumference. Sadly, it’s 50 metre water resistant rating doesn’t allow the Hamilton American Classic Pan Europ Black & Gold watch to be any real use for diving.
Housed within the 42mm by 11.5mm case is the H-30 automatic winding movement with a 3Hz frequency, a Nivachron balance spring and an impressive power reserve of 80 hours. Although the original Hamilton Pan Europ watch was a chronograph, more recent additions have kept things simple with classic central hands for the hours, minutes and seconds and a double day and date window at 3 o’clock. As expected, these features are displayed in yellow gold to match the sloping minutes track and Hamilton logo while luminous markers appear on the hour and minute hands. The Hamilton American Classic Pan Europ watch is finalised by two straps, the first a black calfskin leather band with gold rivets and the second a black and gold NATO textile strap.
Hamilton Ventura Chrono Quartz Black & Gold Watch
For the last two designs in the Hamilton Black & Gold Capsule collection, we’re taken back to the 1950’s with the Hamilton Ventura. Defined by its exceptionally unique shield-like or guitar-shaped case, this watch is known not only as the world’s first battery-powered watch but the timepiece loved by Elvis Presley. The king of rock famously wore the Hamilton Ventura watch in the 1961 movie Blue Hawaii. Just like the original, the new Hamilton Ventura Chrono Quartz is done in a black and gold.
The 32.3mm by 50.3mm stainless steel case comes with yet another layer of black PVD coating as well as sapphire crystal glass, a 50 metre water resistant rating and a black leather strap. The black dial of the Hamilton Ventura Chrono Quartz Black & Gold watch is vastly adorned with yellow gold hardware including three snailed counters for the small seconds and chronograph and three central hands for the hours, minutes and chronograph seconds. A date window is also subtly included at the 4 o’clock position. The Hamilton Ventura Chrono Quartz watch’s dial uses no lume, just golden printed markers at different lengths to follow the shape of the case tipped by golden spheres. Powering the watch is a quartz movement.
Hamilton Ventura S Quartz Black & Gold Watch
A smaller time-only version of the model above, the last release in the new Capsule collection is this Hamilton Ventura S Quartz. Suited to men with a penchant for small watches or more likely women, this design measures in at 24mm in diameter and 37.4mm in length delivering the same iconic shield-shape in black PVD. The steel case also welcomes a combination of brushed and polished finishing, sapphire crystal glass, a knurled crown at 3 o’clock and a water resistant rating of 50 metres.
The dial of the Hamilton Ventura S Quartz Black & Gold watch is significantly less busy than its chronograph counterpart offering its black dial with only three yellow gold hands for the hours, minutes and seconds. The design still presents the familiar extended hour markers that reach the edges of the case crowned by golden orbs. At the centre, a zigzagging line, designed to evoke an electric pulse, spans the dial horizontally from 9 to 3 o’clock. Securing the Hamilton Ventura S Quartz watch to the wrist is another black leather strap.
