Introducing the NOMOS Ludwig Gold 33 Watch

An anywhere, anytime kind-of watch, the new NOMOS Ludwig Gold 33 watch is suited to both the wrists of men and women with a solid 18ct gold case, white silver-plated dial with traditional Roman numerals and the German watch manufacturer’s in-house Alpha manual-winding calibre.

NOMOS Glashutte has always held a special place in our hearts. They were one of the first German watch brand’s we met, and their independently-run manufacture, remarkably thin in-house movements and accessibly priced portfolio left us wanting more. Two years ago, they took to celebrating the 175th anniversary of watchmaking in Glashutte, the German town they call home, offering several limited edition watches. Two years later and the brand appear to still be revelling in the festivities launching additional models made in the 175 year-old tradition of Glashutte watchmaking. One of these is the new NOMOS Ludwig Gold 33 watch which once again honours the history of the town NOMOS Glashutte has called home since 1990.

We’re sure many men, or women for that matter, with a love of larger watches have already clocked the ‘33’ in the name of the NOMOS Ludwig Gold 33 watch and carried on with their internet adventure. That’s OK of course, because at the end of the day, this watch isn’t large in size but it’s 33mm diameter does deserve more credit. NOMOS do market the NOMOS Ludwig Gold 33 as a ladies watch but since it’s 33 millimetre diameter is paired with long lugs and a lug-to-lug width of 42.4mm, it wears bigger than expected on the wrist and as such suits feminine and masculine wrists equally. It’s really a watch you should try on yourself before you make too much judgement.

The perfectly round case of the NOMOS Ludwig Gold 33 watch is crafted from 18 carat 3N gold and shares the brand’s classic design language with a minimalistic approach, sloping lugs and a height of only 6.6 millimetres. The case also reveals a thin unadorned bezel, a small knurled non-screw locked crown at 3 o’clock and a splash-proof 30 metre water resistant rating. Securing the unisex watch to the wrist is a Horween Genuine Shell Cordovan strap in brown with tone-on-tone stitching and a matching 18ct gold winged clasp.

The dial is as equally stand-out as the gold case, finished in white silver-plating and dressed in minimalistic hardware for the telling of the hours, minutes and small seconds. At the centre of the NOMOS Ludwig Gold 33, two impressively slender hands demonstrate the hours and minutes while a third gold marker is placed at the centre of the snailed subsidiary dial for the seconds at 6 o’clock. The seconds track, minutes track and large Roman numerals are printed in black for the ultimate contrast against the crisp white backdrop.

Responsible for powering the complications of the NOMOS Ludwig Gold 33 watch is the brand’s original in-house movement, the Alpha, which first debuted in 2005. It promises 17 jewels, a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour and a 43-hour power reserve. It’s also adjusted in six positions and boasts chronometer level accuracy. When off the wrist, you can admire the manual-winding movement through the sapphire crystal glass case back including decorations like Côtes de Genève and a sunburst pattern on the ratchet and crown wheel.
