Evoking the colours of a tropical lagoon and the underwater creatures that reside there, Japanese watchmaker Seiko has launched a new duo of special edition Seiko Prospex Tropical Lagoon watches under references SRPJ35K1 and SNJ039P1. The first takes its base from the highly collectible Seiko Turtle with its iconic cushion-shaped case and 4 o’clock crown while the second is a Seiko Tuna Hybrid Divers model, electing a chunky round case and bezel, statement pushers and a hybrid analog and digital display.
Seiko Prospex Turtle Tropical Lagoon Special Edition SRPJ35K1 Watch
The Seiko Turtle was originally launched back in 1977, marking its territory as an affordable, accessible and wholly reliable mechanical divers watch. Original pieces from this era are some of the brand’s most highly collectible designs and so it made perfect sense when Seiko revived the Turtle Divers watch in 2016. Meeting all the specifications as previous editions, the new Seiko Prospex Turtle Tropical Lagoon Special Edition SRPJ35K1 watch boasts a unique yet imposing 45mm by 13.4mm stainless steel case with its signature shell-like case (hence the design’s nickname). At 4 o’clock, the case delivers a crown at 4 o’clock while on top, a unidirectional rotating bezel is fitted with a new coloured aluminium insert, one in a gorgeous metallic blue and green combination. The bezel is adorned with a 60 minute diving scale and resides beside Hardlex crystal glass.
Pairing with the new ocean-inspired bezel, the Seiko Prospex Turtle Tropical Lagoon SRPJ35K1 watch introduces a matte black dial with a green-coloured minutes hand. The minutes hand, alongside the arrow-shaped hours and lollipop seconds, are generously filled with glow in the dark Lumibrite matching with the rounded Turtle-typical markers. There’s still a day and date window at 3 o’clock but a new feature can be spotted here, a small luminous marker beside the date which has been added to meet the updated ISO 6425:2018 standard, which requires luminous markers at every hour. Powering the Seiko Prospex Turtle Tropical Lagoon Special Edition SRPJ35K1 watch is the Calibre 4R36 automatic winding movement with a 41-hour power reserve and an accuracy of -35 to +45 seconds/day. The movement is kept hidden behind the 200 metre water resistant screw down case back which sits against the wrist securely by a three-link stainless steel bracelet and a folding buckle with diver’s extension.
Seiko Prospex Tuna Tropical Lagoon Hybrid Divers Special Edition SNJ039P1 Watch
For the second special edition in the new Seiko Tropical Lagoon line-up, the Japanese watchmaker utilises another collectible model called the Seiko Prospex Tuna Hybrid Divers, otherwise known as the Seiko “Arnie”. This watch was first introduced in 1982 and got its nickname for its appearance on the wrist of Arnold Schwarzenegger in films like Predator and Commando. The new Seiko Prospex Tuna Tropical Lagoon Hybrid Divers Special Edition SNJ039P1 watch maintains the architecture of its predecessor with a large, perfectly round case and bezel which evokes the shape of a tuna can.
The statement 47.8mm by 13.8mm stainless steel case is equipped with a large black plastic outer-ring which sits beside a familiar unidirectional rotating aluminium insert bezel. The bezel is adorned in bright emerald green and marine blue to reflect the tropical ocean life inspiration behind the design while the matte black dial greets us with the same shade of green on the minutes hand. The dial is unique for its hybrid display, showcasing traditional analog hands for the hours, minutes and seconds adorned in Lumibrite alongside a digital display at 12 o’clock. These elements on the Seiko Prospex Tuna Tropical Lagoon Hybrid Divers SNJ039P1 watch are powered by the H851 quartz solar movement with an accuracy of +/- 15 seconds per month. Finally, the Seiko Prospex Tuna Tropical Lagoon watch is secured using a blue silicone strap with a traditional steel pin buckle and is water resistant up to 200 metres.
