Maurice Lacroix Aikon Tide Watch Collection Review

In what could be their funkiest and most environmentally-friendly range of wristwear yet, Maurice Lacroix reveals a new partnership with #tide and with it a selection of Aikon Tide watches engineered from upcycled ocean-bound plastic waste. The collection features a stunning selection of neon-coloured dials, quartz movements and price points well under £1,000.

There is currently no aesthetic more prominent in today’s watch industry than the integrated-bracelet luxury sports watch and one of the most notable designs in this category is the Maurice Lacroix Aikon. Since 2016, the Swiss watch manufacturer have transformed their flagship model into several new constructs, from the unique laser engraved case and bracelet of the Urban Tribe Limited Edition to the higher spec Aikon Grand Date. Now, the brand delivers their most vibrant and environmentally-minded Aikon to date launched with a new partnership with #tide.

#tide, also known as Tide Ocean SA, is a Basel-based firm specialising in the upcycling of ocean plastics, giving ocean waste value by utilising it into usable products. For the new Maurice Lacroix Aikon Tide watches, their cases, bezels, case back, crowns, end-pieces and buckles are all engineered from ocean-bound upcycled plastic combined with glass fibre. The resultant composite material is twice as hard as standard plastic, five times more resistant and has a carbon footprint that is six times less than PET. The packaging for each Aikon Tide watch is also made from the composite material, and in total, each watch and box sold makes use of 17 plastic bottles saved from the ocean. Alongside the new collection, Maurice Lacroix has also entered into a long-term partnership with #tide to collect plastic bottles from the seas surrounding various islands in Thailand as well as Indonesia and the Philippines. The brand have also hinted they are working on a range of upcycled straps to eventually pair with the Maurice Lacroix Aikon Tide watches.

While the composite cases are not an obvious trait at first glance, the colourful aesthetics of the Aikon Tide watches certainly are. When it comes to choice, this collection has it all, offering bright and bold hues of mint green, pastel pink, baby blue, navy, magenta, orange, sunshine yellow and forest green. There’s also a single all-black piece perfect for those less partial to cheerful-coloured watches. The bold shades extend across both the cases and dials and pair with a choice of a white or black rubber strap. Some of the dials, noticeably those in blue or pink, also set themselves apart with sparkling diamond-set hour markers. The others opt for classic stick indexes with Superluminova.

The upcycled cases of each Maurice Lacroix Aikon Tide watch retains the signature elements of the Aikon collection including six arm bezels and integrated straps. The cases measure in at 40mm in diameter and 11mm thick with flat sapphire crystal glass for protection of the dial. There’s also a water resistant rating of 100 metres, a screw down crown and a screw down case back. The straps also uphold the brand’s Easy Strap Exchange system which allows you to easily swap around the bracelets for a different look. The Maurice Lacroix Aikon Tide watches are powered by a standard quartz movement and profit from hours, minutes, seconds and date complication.
