As part of their Geneva Watch Days 2021 releases, Parmigiani Fleurier demanded everyone’s attention with the release of their new Tonda PF collection. Alongside a chronograph, a classic two-hander micro-rotor and a split seconds chronograph, the Swiss watch brand celebrated their 25th anniversary with the release of two stunning annual calendar watches with retrograde date. Dressed in a choice of stainless steel or rose gold and paired with a warm grey dial, the Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Annual Calendar watches may just be the most sophisticated of the bunch.
The Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda collection has always been a sanctuary for luxury sports watches with wearable streamlined cases, integrated bracelets and forward-thinking complications. The new Tonda PF series shares many of these characteristics but with an even more slick architecture including a remarkably thin profile, tear-drop shaped lugs and a fluted bezel. At the centre, the dials also make way for some changes including full hand-guilloche detailing, solid openwork hands and the PF logo appearing at 12 o’clock, framed in its own oval applique. As you’ve also probably noticed, the Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF collection is also home to some of the brand’s most emblematic manufacture movements including that of the Calibre PF339 housed within the Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Annual Calendar watch.
One of the greatest successes of the Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Annual Calendar watch is that of the dial layout and how the array of advanced complications have been displayed so discretely and astutely. The 359-component Calibre PF339 automatic winding movement presents a retrograde date around the north-end circumference indicated by a crescent moon-shaped central hand while three further central hands for the hours, minutes and seconds pair with the three subsidiary dials for the annual calendar. The dial at 9 o’clock indicates the day, at 3 o’clock is the month and at 6 o’clock, the 122-year moonphase aperture uniquely displays both hemispheres. The movement also impresses with a frequency of 28,800vph, 32 jewels and a power reserve of 50 hours.
Each of these marvellous complications are displayed on a stunning warm grey guilloche dial set with rhodium plated or rose gold delta-shaped hands to match the material of the case. Parmigiani Fleurier describes the finishing of the dial as “Guilloché Grain d’orge” which stops just before the edge of the sapphire crystal glass by the smooth black retrograde date border. The dial of each Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Annual Calendar watch also features 18 carat rose gold or rhodium plated appliques and the PF logo at 12 o’clock.
The Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Annual Calendar is currently available in two variations, the first in classic stainless steel with a hand knurled 950 platinum bezel and the second in 18 carat rose gold with a matching rose gold bezel. Both measure to 42 millimetres in diameter and 11.1 millimetres in thickness and come equipped with anti-relfectlive sapphire crystal glass, a screw in knurled crown and screw down case back capable of a 100 metre water resistant rating. The case back is also exhibition so allows you to view some of the classic Swiss decorations of the automatic winding movement inside. To complete each Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Annual Calendar watch, an integrated bracelet and folding buckle is included in its corresponding metal.
